I bake a lot of my own bread, the bread in the states seems to be laden with sugar and is way too sweet for my taste buds. I like a nice freshly baked loaf spread with butter and Marmite.
My kids even complain when I have to use store bought for their sandwiches because I have not had the time to bake.
Here is my Bread recipe used regularly in my house and my friend Heathers!
1 1/2 pounds of Bread Flour, I use King Arthur Organic White
15floz warm water
1 1/2tsp Active Dried Yeast
1/2 tsp Sugar
Knob of lard or Shortening
1 tsp Salt
2 tablespoons of ground flax meal and/or 1 tablespoon flax seeds.
In a jug place the required amount of warm water and sprinkle over the Dried Yeast and Sugar, wait for the Yeast to active, it will foam. Approx 15 mins
Weigh Flour and add Salt and Flax and the knob of shortening, I do this in my Kitchen Aid Bowl.
When yeast is activated gradually add liquid to the flour whilst stirring. I use my kitchen aid with the kneading attachment, let it knead for 10 mins until no longer sticky. Form into a ball and leave in the bowl in a warm place covered to rise.
When it has doubled knead it again with the Kitchen Aid to get all of the air out. When done, usually 5 mins lift out on to a floured work space. Press it out into a rectangle, fold over three times and tuck the ends under and place into a greased loaf tin. Cover and set in a warm place to rise.
When risen bake at 450c for 30 mins. When cooked it will sound hollow when tapped on the bottom. Cool on a wire rack.
You will have to watch out for end stealers!
